Hey All!

Often when I am asked what I do, I pause, I do a quick internal evaluation of how this person might respond to knowing that I am a certified sex therapist and educator. Usually I pause and share that I am a therapist, then most ask, what type a physical therapist? Thats when I decide to share or not.

What generally comes next is "oh..." or a "can I ask you a question?" and the questions tend to be very thoughtful and start a great discussion.

This happens every time. To me its an indication that most, not all, want to talk about sexual health in some capacity. We want to know that we are "doing things right" with our partners or our kids.

Here is what we know about medically accurate sexual health education.

• It helps our kids avoid negative health consequences.
• It will improve communication.
• It will help them understand health and unhealthy relationships.
• It will encourage their autonomy over their bodies and encourage respect of others bodily autonomy.
• Show dignity and respect for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
• Protect their academic success.

Can you imagine what it would have been like for you if you had gotten all or most of the information you needed about sexual health and relationships from a trusted adult as a kid? What would have changed for you? I know for me, it would have drastically changed my understanding of myself and my body. It took a lot of hard and emotional lessons to get to a healthy place.
